This is December 25, 2010. You can have a live in maid for P1500/month plus room and board which is approximately $80.00/month.
Helping her with medical and dental bills is expected. Giving her some
days off each month and a vacation week every year is expected.
Most maid level Filipinas can't speak much English, so a translator you can use at a moments notice is necessary. You think they understand you, but the reality is they just nod their heads yes because of being embarrassed about not being able to understand you. They do what they think you want instead. (saving face) You have to give explicit instructions and they must come in small requests. To ask her to understand 3 or 4 tasks at once will likely cause her to not understand any of what you want. Usually maids or helpers stay busy. They want to please you. Once they get the routine going, they are indispensable. Here in the Philippines they expect you to have one. Consequently, delivery people always expect some one to be home, so they don't worry about the time they show up. Older Filipino women consider it a status symbol to have several helpers. You can expect a young wife to not want another woman in the house, but when she gets older that may change. |
